press archive :: GOLDEN GIRL - Kate Hudson interview
"It was great to come into Fool's Gold and already have that comfort zone with Matthew," she continues. "I have a total soft spot for him. He's so endearing - there's really not a mean bone in his body. We can goof around and have a great time, but we also know how to push each other's buttons perfectly. We both have a little bit of a competitive nature and throw little jabs at each other, which suited our characters and the dynamic of their relationship." Set largely at sea, Hudson reflects on a floating shoot. "Water movies are really hard," she begins, "but we saw a manatee! That was cool. That's supposed to be good luck because in that part of the world, you don't usually see those things." Given the good omen, did Kate find the courage to do her own stunts? "There's one scene where I had to hold my breath underwater for a long, long time, and I did that myself. When you see it in the movie though, it doesn't look so hard. Still, I was really proud of myself for doing it because I'd been practising hard to prepare for it. The thing about working in water is that it's so sensitive. You really have to be very careful, and everybody has to be very on. It's very serious. So, there's not really much goofing around when you're working underwater." "At first," says Hudson, "I thought diving was going to be easier than it was. When I had my first real dive, I was terrified to go in the water, but the marine crew and the dive masters were amazing. And once you get down there, it's just incredible. To be able to do my first dive on the Great Barrier Reef was mind-blowing. The sea life was phenomenal. It was like being in a whole other world. Now I'm in love with diving and I can't wait to get back in the water." As the mum of a four year-old boy, is Hudson not a little more afraid, these days, to take potentially life-threatening risks? "A lot of stunt people have kids, and they don't quit their jobs," she reasons. "They just teach their children that this is what they do, and a part of what makes them happy is living their life and thrill-seeking. Me? Originally I wanted the opposite. I had Ryder and never wanted to do anything. I was terrified of everything. But then the process of working on this movie helped me get over a lot of my phobias. "Eventually you realise that you don't want your children to think there's anything to be fearful of. I don't want my son to grow up thinking, 'Don't go in the water. Mum's afraid to get in the ocean, or mum's afraid to go in a helicopter.' I want him to grow up going, 'Oh, Mum scuba dives and skis. She's active and she's not afraid.'" Though there was once a time when Hudson was best known for her famous mum, Hollywood legend Goldie Hawn, since 2000's Almost Famous she's been a star in her own right, and what's more, she has the story to prove it. "I was just in Africa, and I got this horrible, strange, bizarre hive outbreak, and I was a little nervous about it. I was in the middle of nowhere, way out, like near the Botswana border. "I had to go see this doctor, out at a clinic, and he hardly spoke any English. He said he'd never seen anything like it, which is the last thing anyone wants to hear, but then he added that he could still treat it, which was the main thing. Suddenly, and this is the weird bit, out of nowhere he asks to take a picture of me. I was on the other side of the world, in a totally alien environment, covered in hives, but still I got recognized. It was a strange feeling," says Hudson, signing off, "but a good one!"
